The best time to walk around Split is at night. One of the first things that struck us about Split was the whiteness of everything. The limestone pavement (which looks like marble) was the original pavement put down by the Romans about 1700 years ago. The white walls of the Old town were shipped from the nearby island of Brač. White columns made of marble adorn Diocletian’s Palace. At night the smooth whiteness reflects the lights of the old town, making Split one of the most romantic spots you’ll see anywhere.
I’ve written at length on Split. No writing here. This is our last post on Split and we wanted to sum up our stay with photos of one of the most impressive places we’ve ever visited.
Below: images of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and the bell tower.
.
Below: Narodni Trg, one of our favorite squares, located just outside the Iron Gate of the Palace.

All streets led back to the Peristyle, the Palace’s central square. More photos of the Cathedral and bell tower, as well as the 3500 year old Egyptian Sphinx in the square.

Next Up: After 2 months in Split, we’ve made our way up to Venice with quick stops in Zadar, Plitvice Lakes, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Piran and Trieste. Posts coming up in the near future.
